Pablo Fernández-Peñas is Co-Lead of the Melanoma Laboratories at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Professor of Dermatology at the University of Sydney, Head of the Department of Dermatology at Westmead Hospital, Director of the Centre for Translational Skin Research, NSW Lead of the ACRF Australian Centre of Excellence in Melanoma Imaging and Diagnosis, and Co-Head of the Discipline of Dermatology at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia. Previously, he was Staff Specialist (Dermatology) at Hospital Universitario de la Princesa and Clinical Professor at the Universidad Autonoma in Madrid, Spain.
Since moving to Sydney in 2007, Pablo has expanded clinical, research and education services in Western Sydney. He opened the Dermatology Comprehensive Clinical Centre at Westmead Hospital with clinics for Severe Psoriasis, Severe Eczema, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Graft versus Host Disease, Cutaneous Lymphoma, High-Risk Melanoma and Oncodermatology. He set up the Dermatology Clinical Trials and Research Unit, participating in more than 50 clinical trials for melanoma, non-melanoma skin cancer, cutaneous lymphoma, hidradenitis and psoriasis. His main fields of interest are oncodermatology, immunology, quality of life, and information technologies, and has over 180 publications in peer review journals. Biomarkers in cancer – Professor Fernandez-Peñas and his team are looking at new non-invasive methods for early diagnosis of skin cancer (in particular melanoma). There is the constant challenge to find new techniques, to understand what is normal and what is not, and to be able to predict. The team's research will have direct applicability to improve human health.
