The Westmead Institute’s Storr Liver Centre aims to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive liver diseases and liver cancer, with the ultimate goal of developing effective preventive strategies or treatments that cure the disease.

Our research themes include:

We study all aspects of liver disease. Our basic, translational and clinical research covers a range of themes including liver cancer, metabolic liver disease, genetics of liver disease, viral hepatitis, liver immunology, liver injury and fibrosis, drug metabolism and disposition.

We also investigate the bioinformatics of human liver and metabolic diseases, natural history and outcomes of liver disease, and conducts clinical trials for the treatment of viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease and liver cancer.

Research Teams

Obesity-related Liver Disease and Cancer Group

We are working on a world-first approach to combat cancer through exploiting the molecular changes that occur in the liver due to obesity.

Viral Hepatitis Pathogenesis Group

Our research aims to understand the biological mechanisms underlying viral hepatitis so that we can develop new therapies to cure the infection and reduce its complications.

Liver Immunology Group

Our research is leading to better understanding of the role of a patient’s genetics and immune response in the development of chronic liver inflammation, fibrosis and ultimately cirrhosis in people with viral and non-viral liver disease.

Liver Cancer Group

Our basic and translational research focuses on key molecular and cellular interactions which drive liver cancer. The overall goal of our research is to provide new, targeted therapies which will improve overall survival and quality of life in patients suffering from this deadly disease.

Functional Genomics Group

Our basic and clinical research focuses on the genetics and epigenetics of liver disease progression and their potential diagnostic and therapeutic translational impacts.
