WIMR research assistant Ms Rui Dan Xie has been awarded one of two nationwide Science Upskill Scholarships from Professionals Australia.

This skills development scholarship program supports continuing professional development for science professionals.

Rui said she would put the prize towards a media and communication course through Science in Public.

“Scientists are often well-practised in conveying research formally through conferences, seminars, lectures and published journals.

"However, most scientists and STEM students are never trained or taught explicitly the art of effective communication.

"I believe that it is essential for all scientists to learn how to convey the complexity of our work in an accessible manner to the public, media, government, industry and other stakeholders.

"This course – working with experienced communicators and journalists – will equip me with knowledge and confidence to effectively communicate my work when media opportunities arise,” Rui said.

Congratulations Rui!
