Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the leading cause of primary liver cancer worldwide, although the mechanisms are unclear. Viral mutations and host immune responses are thought to drive development of cancer. We have developed HBV replicons containing naturally occurring mutations in the HBx gene, to study the mechanisms of HBV-induced liver cancer in cell culture models.
