In 2015, the building received the highest honour in NSW architecture, the Sulman Medal for Public Architecture. The judging panel from the Australian Institute of Architects praised the building as "an uplifting and inspiring environment for collaboration and research"; which provided staff with "a beguiling sense of well-being".

The nine-story complex comprises 17,500 square metres of natural light-filled laboratory and office space.

Housing state-of-the-art scientific equipment necessary to conduct advanced medical research, the new building’s core high-technology facilities serve not only the Institute but also scientists from the Westmead Research Hub comprising neighbouring Westmead research institutes, hospitals and beyond – consolidating a physical research hub in the centre of the Westmead health campus.

This creates new opportunities for enhanced collaboration, and sharing of knowledge, ideas and technology – maximising what can be achieved with limited research funds.
