Westmead Institute researcher, Professor Richard Bryant, has been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science for his work in psychological responses to trauma.
The Fellowship recognises Australia’s most distinguished scientists who have performed outstanding research in their field.

Professor Bryant, group leader of our Traumatic Stress Group, is the most published and cited clinical psychologist in Australia. His diagnostic and treatment protocols have been translated into more than 15 languages and are the gold standard in most countries.
Trauma and loss are among the main causes of psychological problems worldwide. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects approximately four per cent of the population, causing anxiety, distressing memories, and sleep problems in many survivors of disaster, war, assault, and accidents. Here at the Westmead Institute, Professor Bryant conducts studies into the mechanisms behind PTSD and prolonged grief, and the best ways to treat these conditions.
